The Systematic Learning Model: A 3x3 Matrix Framework for Rapid Skill Acquisition and Knowledge Retention

I’d like to talk about my experiences as a long-time student and working professional who has spent over 10 years honing my skills for successful learning while on the clock. For individuals who don’t have all the time in the world and want to learn new abilities as efficiently and affordably as possible, I’d like to introduce you to what I term the “Systematic Learning Model”. The term systematic refers to my experience with Systematic training, but broken down into smaller chunks in a three-by-three grid. I’ve been utilizing this for virtually my entire educational and professional career, and I’d want to share it with you for consideration.

I will keep the concept short and simple in this article.

A Structured Approach to Accelerated Knowledge Acquisition

The Systematic Learning Model (SLM) is my personal approach to learning, which incorporates systematic information consumption, practical application, and knowledge consolidation. This technique uses a variety of learning tools and a systematic approach to improve information retention and skill development.

Core Framework

The SLM uses a 3x3 matrix structure to organize the learning process, focusing on vertical columns for learning phases, information consumption and documentation, practical application and error analysis, and horizontal rows for learning resources.

The SLM follows proven learning theories and cognitive science principles. Self-regulated learning (SRL) is an important component of this approach since it emphasises human ownership and control over the learning process. The model’s structure encourages active involvement and what I have learned to be called metacognition, both of which are necessary components for efficient learning. Carpenter et al. (2022) have a great journal on this called “The science of effective learning with spacing and retrieval practice” which I feel match the techniques I have used over many years as a student.

Implementation Methodology

The model requires three distinct learning resources for each learning cycle, for example, the 3x3 matrix would look like this:

Phase 1: Information Consumption

Phase 1 of learning involves learners documenting new concepts, taking notes, creating rough maps, and recording initial impressions and questions. This phase prioritizes quantity over quality, allowing for complete immersion in the subject matter without organization concerns.

Phase 2: Practical Application

The 2nd phase of learning involves hands-on application of concepts, deliberate error-making, problem-solving exercises, and real-world application attempts, utilizing the principle of learning through doing for improved retention and understanding.

Phase 3: Knowledge Synthesis

The final phase involves organizing accumulated knowledge, integrating practical insights, creating comprehensive reference materials, and developing personal learning artifacts.

Heres an example: I want to Learn Python Programming

Let’s say I want to learn a new programming language, this is how I would structure the learning strategy using the Systematic Learning Model.

First Row (Udemy Course)

  • Document syntax and basic concepts
  • Complete course exercises
  • Create reference documentation

Second Row (YouTube Tutorial Series)

  • Note alternative approaches
  • Build sample projects
  • Document best practices

Third Row (Programming Book)

  • Extract advanced concepts
  • Implement complex features
  • Synthesize comprehensive guide

Implementation Guidelines

As you can see; the Systematic Learning Model (SLM) offers numerous benefits including enhanced retention, multiple exposure to core concepts, active engagement through practical application, structured review and synthesis, comprehensive understanding, multiple perspective integration, error-based learning opportunities, systematic knowledge building, efficient learning process, and clear progression metrics.

I would suggest that the learning process include resource selection, time management, and quality control. Resources should offer diverse perspectives, complement each other, and provide comprehensive coverage. Time should be allocated effectively across phases, with 30% for information consumption, 40% for practical application, and 30% for synthesis and documentation.

I would consider a framework for measuring success, evaluating learning outcomes through self-assessment protocols, practical skill demonstrations, and knowledge application tests, and identifying common challenges and solutions as you progress through the stages for each of the learning materials.

Conclusion

The Systematic Learning Model provides a systematic yet flexible method to accelerated learning that I have used on myself for many years, and I hope it can be examined and modified to assist other students in similar situations as mine. I believe that by combining numerous learning resources with a methodical process of consumption, application, and synthesis, learners can attain thorough understanding and retention of new skills and knowledge, even if they are working full-time or have limited study time to begin with.

I discovered that the model’s effectiveness stems from its systematic approach to learning, which adheres to recognised educational theories (wich I have references below) while providing practical, tangible steps for execution. Its versatility to various courses and learning environments makes it an invaluable resource, in my opinion, for both individual students and educational institutions.
